3 Mark 2:1-12 Jesus: Healer & Forgiver

4 1 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.

5

6 Mark 1:33-34 The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.

7 He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

8 Mark 1:38  Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”

9 1 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.

10 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.

11 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.

12 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.

13 Deuteronomy 22:8 … rail around roof so no one falling off roof can blame you …

14 Matthew 24: … then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak.

15

16 This bespoke both their faith and their fervency in this address to Christ. Hereby it appeared that they were in earnest, and would not go away, nor let Christ go without a blessing. (Matthew Henry)

17 Genesis 32:26 But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

18 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.

19 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

20 6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,

21 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that. He’s blaspheming
7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

22 Micah 7:18 "Who is God, that pardons iniquity?”

23 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?

24 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’?

25 “The scribes could have said either of the alternatives in verse Mark 9 with equal futility. Jesus could say either with equal effectiveness”

26 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”

27 Daniel 7:13-14  “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was the son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.

28 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

29 Mark 14:61 Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

30 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

31 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses
The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.

32 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think
“You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.

33 Mark 2: But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, So he said to the man,  “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

34 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all
12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

35 "Sweet saying. The bed carried the man: now the man carried the bed
"Sweet saying! The bed carried the man: now the man carried the bed.” (Johann Bengel)
