Division: “Facts and Properties”
2
FACTS The quotient in a division fact is the same as a missing factor in the related multiplication fact. If you remember the multiplication facts and how to make fact families, you will know the division facts. Since we know 9 X 4 = 36, also know 36 / 4 = 9
3
FACTS We can write two multiplication and two division expressions for the numbers 4, 9 and 36. Like this, 9 X 4 = / 4 = 9 4 X 9 = / 9 = 4 These four expressions form a Fact family. The fact family for 4, 9 and 36 can also be written in vertical form. ÷ ÷9 X X
4
PROPERTIES Division has several properties that can help you remember some division facts. If the divisor is 1, the quotient is the same as the dividend. 5 1/ ÷ 1 = 9
5
PROPERTIES If the divisor and the dividend are the same number, the quotient is 1. 1 8 / ÷ 6 = 1
6
PROPERTIES If the dividend is zero, the quotient is zero. 0 0 ÷ 7 = 0
÷ 7 = 0 2/ 0
7
PROPERTIES NEVER divide by zero.
