Purpose The purpose of the IntelliBar is to give users more control over their appliances. Functions: Surge protection Individual outlet power switching Active outlet indicator LEDs Individual outlet power consumption monitoring Automatic overcurrent protection WiFi connectivity for remote control and monitoring

Why, you ask? According to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, between 5 and 10 percent of all the electricity consumed by residential users comes from devices not in use. They go on to say that this “stand by” power contributes to about 1 percent of global CO2 emissions.Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory With the IntelliBar, you would not only save hundreds a year but also help save the planet while you’re at it.

Hardware Design Each outlet will be limited to 10 amps due to the limitations of our relays. This will also be the cut-off threshold for the automatic overcurrent protection. The voltage for all of the outlets will be measured by attenuating the line voltage with an LM2902 OP Amp and feeding the output into an analog input on the Spark Core. The current for each outlet will be measured by multiplying the voltage difference that’s across a shunt resistor, also using an LM2902 OP Amp, and feeding the outputs into four analog inputs on the Spark Core.

User Interface/Experience Objective: To design a user friendly cross platform mobile/web application that displays energy/power readings and also controls the switching of individual outlets.

Demo Currently a browser application Ability to communicate with spark core and switch outlets with minimal latency

Technologies that make this possible REST API: Allows us to interact with the core through HTTP (hyperlinks). It exposes internal system to the external world. AJAX/JSON: AJAX makes it possible to get real-time updates. Server doesn’t send actual database results but a JSON representation (JavaScript friendly). Twitter Bootstrap: Front-end Framework (visual interface). JavaScript (Node.js & Angular.js): Front-end and Back-end frameworks (Server side and client side). Cordova/PhoneGap: Application deployment; Allows the app to be cross platform and deploys it to the app store/google play.

Additional Functionality Switch programming (set a particular outlet on for a certain number of hours or Joules a day; like an alarm application) Alerts (vibration, audio or via text message) Expansion (controlling more than one Bar from the same app/account) Automatic switching (e.g. device in stand by for more than 2 hrs can be turned off automatically)

Challenges The Spark Core does not support Wi-Fi connections with WPA enterprise i.e. Most University & Schools; additional sub-network may be needed Programming the app so that it is expandable and stores user configurations Ensuring that the IntelliBar uses the least amount of energy as possible Achieving a high degree of power monitoring accuracy without making the circuit overly complex
