The Situation…. The Nutritional Transition Most of the responsibility for food choices and lifestyle practices rests on the individual Traditional Approaches Outdated Plans and Programs

The Challenge….. Limited Resources for Food and Nutrition Security Programs Weak Food and Nutrition Councils or Commissions Un-coordinated approach to the implementation of FNS programs Limited information due to weak or non- existent information systems

The Goal…. To implement programs in favor of Food and Nutrition security To update policies and plans To convince decision makers of the need to put in place appropriate policies

The Belize Case…. “A Food and Nutrition Security Commission chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries will be established…. The Commission will meet periodically to review the implementation of the policy and programs and will be responsible for the mobilization of financial, technical and logistical resources and will report to Cabinet periodically….” From A Food and Nutrition Security Policy for Belize

The Needs…. The Needs…. Commissioners/councilors with knowledge and experience in FNS Access to information regarding the planning implementation and progress of programs Cadre of trained professionals Equipment for Information systems- computers Infrastructure – office space, vehicles, Budget support Secretariat

Recommendations to Build Capacity…. Train Commissioners to fulfill their roles; Understand concepts in FNS in order to make informed decisions, guide policy To be able to monitor and evaluate coordinate FNS activities To be able to determine research and training required to improve FNS in countries To be able to communicate To be able to negotiate with policy makers Develop advocacy skills Develop negotiation skills

Recommendations to build Capacity…. Develop human resources in nutrition Need nutritionists, public Health Nutritionists, agronomists, dieticians, economists, anthropologists, educators, Environmental Health Specialists etc. Continue to utilize traditional means of communication Strengthen one-on-one means of communication Build stronger alliances with the media.
