Introduction How can we retrofit house? -Roofs -Windows -Walls Further Application & Conclusion Table of Contents

What is Retrofit? Retrofitting is the improving of existing buildings with energy efficiency equipment. In this presentation we will mainly focus on insulation efficiency

Why Do we Retrofit? Energy efficiency usage Decreasing costs of energy

Why Do we Retrofit?

How Can We Retrofit Walls Roofs Windows

Roofs Big Percentage!!

Why there is so much heat exchange through roofs? Roofs -Convection: Hot air goes up and interacts with exterior air. -Sunlight directly hits the roof!

Roofs It’s very IMPORTANT to insulate the roof!

1. Double Ceiling Adding another layer of ceiling Inside the layer, it’s vacuum →no convection and conduction Roofs

2. Add reflective materials (Aluminum foils) Roofs -Reflects over 90% of the light it receives -Acts best in hot countries (like Israel!)

Windows 1.Install Window Insulation film film which can be applied to glass windows to reduce heat transfer.

Windows Air has very low thermal conductivity. Air: 0.024 W/mK Glass: 0.96 W/mK

The film has to be… -High R-value -Low conductivity -Sturdy -Good air-sealing Windows

Plastic -Low heat conductivity -Easy to airseal Windows

Window accounts 15~30% of total heat loss of the building. Normal window film reduces heat transfer thorught window by maximum 40% Average window film costs 10~20$ per one and the heating cost is about 300$ for a month. Windows

Walls Panels We can decide what to put inside the core -Polyurethane foam -Styrofoam -cotton batt..

Epoxy +Cement Epoxy: Very high R-value, but too expensive… Cement: relatively cheap high density→ big thermal mass Walls

Conclusion We use lots of energy in heating&cooling the house By retrofitting, we can save a lot of energy, and cost for it. There’re many different kinds of retrofitting, and most of them are cost-effective and easy to install.
