My Inference: Mulan feels sad and upset. Why does Mulan decide to help her father? Story Clues pgs. 58-61 Her father is drafted into the army. He is old and frail. Students need to use personal experience as well as clues in the story to make inferences (reasonable guesses) about characters, events, or settings. Reread pages 64 and 65 aloud. Find details that help you infer how Mulan feels. Fill in your inference chart.

Many words have more than one meaning. When readers come across such a word in a sentence, they have to decide which meaning best fits the sentence. When you come to a multiple meaning word in a sentence, the other words in the sentence (the context), give clues about the definition.

A syllable is a word part with one vowel sound. Dividing an unfamiliar word into syllables can help in pronouncing it. By nightfall she was camped by the bank of the Yellow River.
