11 Welcome to The Alcorn State University LINK (Literacy Information Network Konnection)

12 LINK teaches skills for using the Library in both its physical and virtual forms. It can be used independently or in conjunction with a class. Each LINK tutorial includes objectives and a quiz to check your success in meeting those objectives. Introduction

13 After completing the Alcorn LINK, the user should be able to master the following ACRL Information Literacy Competency/Standards for Higher Education: Standard 1: The information literate student determines the nature and extent of the information needed.

14 Standard 2:The information literate student accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.

15 Standard 3: The information literate student evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system.

16 Standard 4: The information literate student, individually or as a member of a group, uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.

17 Standard 5: The information literate student understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally.

18 Information Literacy Definition Information Literacy is the ability to access, retrieve, evaluate, synthesize, and use information in the pursuit of knowledge to benefit the person, society, and the global community. It encompasses critical thinking that engages the individual in scholarly discourse to further the intellectual development of the individual (ACRL)

Information Literacy Students should be able to collect, examine, and manage information effectively and efficiently, judge the range of information needed, evaluate and analyze information and its souces critically, and synthesize and integrate selected information appropriately.

25 7.Research Skills Students should be able to perform searches, annotate and document sources, and conduct research projects using both primary and secondary resources, including books, journals, databases, Websites, and other research tools pertinent to the topic of investigation. Students will thus have acquired the ability to use information systems effectively and proficiently, enabling them to pinpoint, evaluate, and master the content of any knowledge base needed.
