Indiana Jones– Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones was directed by Steven Spielberg; he did not become one of the greatest directors in film history by producing half-witted movies, and Raiders of the Lost Ark is no exception. Indiana Jones is a fast paced action film that has intentional cinematic tendencies that enhance its quality. Let’s sink our teeth into three of them: color choice, object symbolism, and framing. 4 RED Red. It is a color that inevitably grabs an audience’s attention. Continuously throughout Indiana Jones, the color red appears when a particular object or individual is meant to be singled out or noticed. The color red implies power, and attracting such immense attention to a particular detail inevitably gives that detail power within the film. This is a subtle yet effective technique to aid the audience in identifying details in the film that will help them to clarify the current situation or to allow them to foreshadow possible events in the future of the film plot. If one feature is exceptionally noticeable, it will most likely be of importance at some point in the film.

Red. It’s Obvious. Attention to red in suitcase.. What will be put in it? Most suitcases aren’t red. All other colors are faded, “LIFE” is meant to be focused on Person in red is clearly supposed to be the focus of attention– all other individuals blend into the background with neutral colors

“Hand me the whip!”–Jones Indiana Jones is notoriously pictured with a whip in action. The whip is part of his persona, as well as an object that consistently allows the audience to foreshadow upcoming events; if the whip is taken out, action is going to follow. Specific attention is placed on the whip, for it is both a trademark of Jones and an element of excitement to add to this action packed film. Let’s face it, everyone loves the whip.

In this scene, Jones begins to win the fight and save the girl once he reaches for and utilizes his whip (Climax of Action) (38:54) Beginning scene begins with Jones unleashing his whip to fight (Rising Action) (3:11) Whip is used to save Jones and thus changes the scene from dismal to exciting action (1:28:13)

Up Close and Personal Any type of literature is not effective unless it appeals to the audience’s pathos. Without connecting the audience through emotion, people simply aren’t interested. Although Indiana Jones has a plethora of long shots to establish the scene or conflict, it is the close-ups in this production that leave the viewer with the feelings that Spielberg intended. 9 All of these close-ups show strong emotions on the faces of enemies of Indiana Jones– such close ups force the audience to feel how these characters are feeling. This includes sharing their fear, disgust, and pain.

What Can We Conclude? Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark is a film that is certainly not lacking cinematic style and diversity. It is simple to pinpoint why this film is so enjoyable if the depths of the cinematic trends are explored. “The public has an appetite for anything about imagination - anything that is as far away from reality as is creatively possible.” – Steven Spielberg
