Founder: KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS March 29, 1882 St. Mary’s Parish New Haven, Connecticut, USA On October 2, 1881 a small group of men met in the basement of St. Mary's Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. Called together by their 29-year-old parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney. Purpose: To render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families.

7 PURPOSE To assist young catholic boys in their critical stage of their adolescence. - Physical Change - Social Change To train the members to become future leaders To become future Knights of Columbus members upon reaching the age of 18.

8 ORGANIZATION Each unit shall be known as a Circle and shall be identified by the number assigned by the Supreme Council Committee on Charters upon Institution of the Circle. (Section II, Art. III)

9 SQUIRES DIFFERENT WHAT MAKES A
The purpose of the Squires program is to develop young men as Catholic leaders who understand their religion A Squires circle is designed to be run both by and for young men. A Squires is an athletic team, a youth group, a social club, a cultural and civic improvement association, management training program, and a spiritual awareness course all rolled into one.

WHO ARE THE COLUMBIAN SQUIRES? Catholic young men between the ages of 10 and 18 who are members of unit called “CIRCLE.” HOW TO JOIN THE COLUMBIAN SQUIRES? By invitation from a Squire or a Knight.

14 DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES FUNCTION of a CIRCLE OFFICERS

15 CHIEF SQUIRE The Chief Executive Officer of the circle:
He presides at all meetings Select the members to chair the four permanent committees He appoints the Marshal, Sentry, Arm & Pole Captains He must be a model of spiritual, social and moral conduct for all the members. He must gather all information; seek the opinion of other officers before making a final decision. He must inspire enthusiasm, encourage active participation of all officers and members and build a strong executive staff to serve the circle well.

16 DEPUTY CHIEF SQUIRE In the event a chief squire is unable to execute his duties and responsibilities through sickness or otherwise, he shall assume all duties and responsibilities of that office. He may also be appointed by the chief squire to serve as chairman of special committee. He should also be familiar with the rules of parliamentary procedures. As “Second in Command” he should keep current with all facets of committee work and schedules. He is the Chief Squire’s most valuable advisor. He provides another point of view on issues and decisions that must be made about running a circle.

17 NOTARY SQUIRE The notary keeps a record of the proceedings of all circle meetings, and is responsible for keeping the keeping the State Circle and Supreme Council informed of the circle status. He handles correspondence with circle members, with other circles, with the state and supreme council. He is required to keep an attendance record of all meetings & to mark absent members not attending meetings. He must maintain inventory of circle paraphernalia and equipment. He must submit the membership document to the Supreme Council for all members’ transaction. He must submit the officer’s report immediately after the circles election.

18 BURSAR SQUIRE As the circle’s treasurer, the bursar collects and deposits all initiation fees, annual dues and income from fund-raising projects. After the Circle’s majority, he shall pay all bills for expenses incurred by the Circle. He must prepare a current record of the circle’s finances on the monthly financial report, which he must present during the business meeting of the circle. He is responsible for payment of capital tax and supply charges, in a timely manner, to avoid suspension of the circle.

19 MARSHAL SQUIRE The marshal is responsible for ceremonial robes and paraphernalia. He is required to prepare the circle chamber for regular meetings, as describes in the ceremonial booklet, and to clean and maintain all equipment, when necessary. He shall act as sergeant-at-arms during meetings checks membership card of those present, escort visitors and maintaining order under the direction of the Chief Squire.

20 SENTRY The sentry shall guard the entrance to the business chamber during meetings and investitures and refuses entry to anyone who is not properly identified. If in doubt, the sentry should consult the Chief Counselor, who will decide on proper identification.

21 ARM & POLE CAPTAINS The arm and pole captains assist the marshal in the investiture ceremony; each is assigned by the marshal to lead a group of candidates. The arm and pole captains shall serve as assistants to the marshal as he fulfills his duties and responsibilities.

22 SPIRITUAL CHAIRMAN A circle’s spiritual activities program makes the difference between a Squire circle and any other organization. The spiritual committee works with the councelor and father prior, to arrange activities of a spiritual and religious nature for the circle.

23 SERVICE CHAIRMAN The service committee selects and arranges community service programs for the circle. The projects are conducted for the benefit of individuals, organization other than the circle. Activities should foster feelings of loyalty to the church and to the nation and of service to the community.

24 MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN A circle recruitment strategy is one of the responsiblities of the membership committee. The outgoing recruitment of new members is necessary to keep a circle alive. By constantly bringing in younger members, the circle can remain strong.

25 CIRCLE CHAIRMAN It conducts programs for members to get to know one another better as friends. Its purpose is to promote brotherhood and fellowship through social and athletic programs. It is also responsible for fund-raising activity and public relations.
