Explanation Eating disorders is a disease that causes people to eat in unhealthy ways. Most eating disorders causes people to harm the body. A main reason people adapt to an eating disorder is because they are uncomfortable with their body. There are three main eating disorders.

Anorexia Anorexia is were someone refuses to eat, even though they may be hungry. They choose not to eat because they are afraid to gain weight, also they have a distorted body image.

Symptoms Severe weight loss Low blood pressure Slow heartbeat Growth of fine hair on body

Bulimia Bulimia is a disorder were people will eat a large amount of food in a short period of time, and then either take laxatives or self-induced vomit. Also known as binging and purging

Symptoms Damaged teeth or gums from the acid in the vomit Persistent sore throat dehydration

Compulsive eating Compulsive eating is a disorder where a person can't stop eating. Overeaters use food as a way to cope with stress, daily problems and emotional conflicts.

Symptoms Binge eating Depression Eating little in public, but still overweight.

How is it diagnosed? Anorexia: eat foods with low calories and fats, cutting foods in small pieces, more time playing with their food than actually eating it, cook meals for others without eating, compulsive exercise, dress in layers to hide weight loss, becomes more isolated.

Bulimia: secretive about food, spends time planning the next binge, taking many trips to the bathroom after eating, take food or hoard in strange places, compulsive exercise.

Compulsive overeating: reoccurring binge eating, Binge eating occurs, on average, at least 2 days a week for 6 months, eating alone, eating large amounts when not hungry.

Those affected Anorexia affects everyone, but most are American teenage girls. Bulimia effects primarily women between the ages of 13 and 40. Compulsive overeating overall effects men more than women.
