Also there is a summary of the risks associated with alcohol abuse and some issues to apply thinking skills to. Discuss the issues as a group.

What is alcohol?  The alcohol that is drunk is called ethanol.  It has been drunk by humans for 1000’s of years.  It is the poisonous waste product excreted by the microscopic fungus called yeast.  The ethanol contained in one bottle of spirits can kill.  Alcohol is an addictive depressant drug that is legal.

3. Did you know? As many as 1 in 10 children drink alcohol in their final year of primary school.

4. Alcohol can damage brain development while you are still growing so it affects your school performance leading to underachievement.

5. If a pregnant woman drinks alcohol it can damage the unborn child.

6. Young People and Alcohol : National Data  Every year 6,000 children end up in hospital as a result of alcoholic poisoning or injuries they have got under the influence of alcohol with some of this number tragically dying.

7. Choking on vomit while sleeping is a common cause of death. Leaving someone who is unconscious from alcohol poisoning is not a good idea.

8. Alcohol can cause long term liver damage. 25,000 deaths a year due to alcohol abuse long term. Cirrhosis of the liver kills people prematurely.

10. Alcohol is a drug that changes our behaviour; usually for the worse. It makes people do things they later regret.
