2  Bulimia is an eating disorder by frequent episodes of binge eating, followed by the urge to avoid gaining weight.  Eat large amounts quickly, then feel guilt and try to “undo” and get rid of what you have eaten.  Symptoms:  Obsession with body and weight  Fear of not being able to stop eating  Guilt/shame/depression after eating  Eat to the point of feeling sick  Make yourself vomit, or take laxatives after eating  Prevalence:  Affects men and women of all ages.  Can put body and even life at severe risk.  Causes imbalances in the body EATING DISORDERS – BULIMIA

3  Anorexia is when individuals believe they’re fat, even if they are dangerously thin and restrict their eating to the point of starvation.  Symptoms:  Dieting despite being thin  Pretending or lying about eating  Dramatic weight loss  Denial that you’re too thin  Compulsive exercise, using diet pills, laxatives or throwing up after meals  Prevalence:  Third most common chronic illness amongst adolescents  Only 10-15% of people with anorexia are men EATING DISORDERS - ANOREXIA

4  OCD stands for obsessive compulsive disorder. This is the constant fear or need to perform routines that lead to obsessions. An example is someone who has a fear of germs and constantly washes their hands.  Symptoms:  Fear of contamination  Fear of harming others  Need for order, symmetry or exactness  Excessive doubt  Prevalence:  1 in 100 adults in the US have OCD.  1 in 200 kids and teens in the US have OCD. ANXIETY DISORDERS - OCD

5  SAD stands for social anxiety disorder. It is when a person has an excessive and unreasonable fear of social situations.  Symptoms & Situations that provoke anxiety:  Eating or drinking in front of others  Being the centre of attention  Intense anxiety in social situations  Avoiding any social situations  Confusion, pounding heart, sweating, shaking, blushing etc.  Prevalence:  Second most common anxiety disorder in the US.  Third most common mental disorder.  19.2 million Americans estimated to have SAD.  More common in women than men.  Surfaces more in adolescence than adulthood.
