2. 2 This program, in association with Keep Rockland Beautiful Inc., is designed for elementary and middle school students. Students rotate through 6 to 10 different “eco-stations” which fall under three main themes:  Getting to know the local ecology  Protecting our natural resources  Reduce, reuse, and recycle What is Earth B.E.A.T.? 3. 3 What is Earth B.E.A.T.? B asic E nvironmental A wareness T raining  Groups will consist of 10 – 12 students each  Each “eco-station” will last approximately 15 - 20 minutes  There are currently 23 different activities to choose from, including: Habitat Loss - like musical chairs, but the tarp -- our habitat -- gets smaller and smaller relative to population, so fewer kids fit onto to it. Enviroscape model - allows children to squirt "rain" on a typical landscape and see how pollution from various land uses enters waterways. Virtually all schools request this activity. Wildlife Bingo – similar to regular bingo, instead of letters there are various wildlife animals.  Some other stations: Garbage Relay, “Survival” Tag, Hudson River Riddles, Environmental Jeopardy

4. 4 Why are we participating in Earth B.E.A.T.?  We are one of over 20 schools in Rockland County participating this year.  This program will give our students an opportunity to better understand how WE ALL can protect our environment for ourselves and future generations.  Environmental “contentiousness” is becoming increasingly important in our society.  Ecology and environmentalism is part of the 7th grade science curriculum.  This training can lead to more environmental activities in our school and community.

5. 5 How/Who/When will we be participating in Earth B.E.A.T.? The logistics of the program are as follows:  Date - Thursday, April 2nd 2009  Time - 12:00 to 3:00 PM (Periods 5 – 8)  Location - Gymnasium  Layout - Two to three stations for each of the three main themes - East and West teams will be split on either side of the gymnasium - Each team will have similar “eco-stations”  Participants - All 7th grade students and their teachers will participate this year  Teachers/parent volunteers will receive training to act as activity leaders for the various stations  Further information regarding teacher training and specific “eco-stations” will be coming via e-mail in the next couple of weeks
