REC Foundation Industry Certifications Event Partner Summit July 10, 2014 Dan Larochelle and Matt Conroy 1
2
Intended Outcomes 1)Learn about industry certifications growth and need 2)Understand the REC Foundation Certifications and their design, curricula content, facilities needed, various state and national funding for certifications 3)Understand proctoring procedures 4)Understanding the scoring rubric for the certifications 5)Learn the process to take the certifications 6)Management of student data and their results 7)Learn how to purchase certifications (handouts)
3
What are Industry Certifications? Growing number of states are now requiring industry certifications Potential funding for students passing Federal Carl Perkins funding available Provides students with a certificate for entry level Help students determine areas of interest and strength in Pre Engineering and Robotics Developed over four years by teams of engineers from local and internationally based corporations, physicists, HS teachers, and university professors
4
REC Foundation Certifications Based on 150 hours of HS level coursework. Designed to work with a school’s available resources for the facility, teacher expertise and curricula Two certifications – Pre-Engineering Robotics Fundamentals of Engineering exam must be passed first for both certifications Certificates will be issued if the set criteria is met. Proctors will have access to student’s progress and certificates earned.
5
Pre-Engineering Certification Fundamentals of Engineering Students choose “ANY” two of the following modules: Mechanical Computer Science & Engineering (Programming) Electrical Chemical Aerospace Civil Engineering Engineering Technology Manufacturing Technology Robotics Certification Fundamentals of Engineering Mechanical Computer Science & Engineering (Programming) Electrical Note: Students earn BOTH Certifications when completing Robotics Certification, as requirements exceed Pre-Engineering Certification. Certification Requirements
6
Certification Scoring Rubric Pre-Engineering Certification Minimum score is 70 Points Must pass Fundamentals of Engineering module Must pass a minimum of two of engineering modules Robotics Certification Minimum score is 80 Points Must pass Fundamentals of Engineering module Must pass Mechanical, Electrical and Programming modules
7
Certification Scoring Example 1 Albert Einstein scores a 82% on the Fundamentals of Engineering and earns 50 points. He scores a 92% on the Electrical module and earns 15 points. He scores a 78% on Chemical and earns 5 points: Fundamentals 50 points Electrical 15 points Chemical 5 points Total: 70 points Albert earns a Pre-engineering certification with emphasis in Electrical and Chemical. Fundamentals of Engineering Rubric Exam Length: 90 Minutes Minimum Passing Grade: 70% Certification Scoring Rubric: 95-100% 65 Point 85-94% 60 Points 75-84% 50 Points 70-74% 40 Points < 70% 0 Points Rubric for all engineering module areas Prerequisite: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering module Exam Length: 30 Minutes Minimum Passing Grade: 70% Certification Scoring Rubric: 90-100% 15 Points 80-89% 10 Points 70-79% 5 Points < 70% 0 Points

Certification Scoring Example 2 Henry Ford scores a 92% on the Fundamentals of Engineering and earns 60 points. He scores a 91% on the Mechanical module and earns 15 points. He scores a 61% on Aerospace module and earns no points: Fundamentals60 points Electrical 15 points Aerospace 0 points Total: 75 points While Henry has 75 points, he did not pass the minimum two modules and receives no certification. Henry can retake Aerospace module or take a different module in order to earn his certification. Fundamentals of Engineering Rubric Exam Length: 90 Minutes Minimum Passing Grade: 70% Certification Scoring Rubric: 95-100% 65 Point 85-94% 60 Points 75-84% 50 Points 70-74% 40 Points < 70% 0 Points Rubric for all engineering module areas Prerequisite: Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering module Exam Length: 30 Minutes Minimum Passing Grade: 70% Certification Scoring Rubric: 90-100% 15 Points 80-89% 10 Points 70-79% 5 Points < 70% 0 Points
