1 Welcome to Title I Reading and Math Night! Underwood Elementary School September 16, 2013

2 My name is Lois Johnson. I have been the Title One Reading and Math for 9 years. This is my 30 th year at Underwood Elementary.

3 Agenda o Inform the parents about the Title One program o Explain the requirements of the Title One program o Description and explanation of the forms of academic assessment used o Explain how a student becomes eligible for services and exiting the program

4 What is Title One? Title One is a supplemental reading and math program that serves students in grades kindergarten through 3 rd grade Students in Title One are included in the regular classroom for reading, language arts, and math just like always.

5 What is Title One? Students in Title One receive extra instruction and support in developing reading and math skills and strategies. Our goal is to get every student’s reading and math skills at or above grade level.

6 What is Title One Reading? Title One Reading focuses on the five essential components of reading instruction  Phonemic awareness  Phonics  Fluency  Vocabulary  Reading comprehension

7 What is Title One Math? o Title One Math focuses on the Iowa Core math standards for each grade level in the following areas.  Operations and Algebraic Thinking  Numbers and Operations in Base Ten  Measurement and Data  Geometry

17 Selection for Title One Why your child may have been selected for Title One support  Low score on the rubric  Below average score on two or more assessments  Additional support needed

18 Exiting the Title One Program o Students may exit the program any time during the school year. o Students will be assessed using the rubric at the beginning of the school year and each quarter.

19 What happens during Title One Time? Students come to Title One each day for 20-30 minutes. Instruction is provided to complement and support instruction in the classroom. The students learn through games, computer and I pad activities.

20 What happens during Title One Math Time? For example, if the 2nd graders are working on telling time in the room, then the Title One students will be using clocks or a computer activity to practice this skill.

21 What happens during Title One Time? If third grade students are reading about communities, then the Title One students might be reading a book about London.

22 How parents can help Talk with your child about their school day. Read to your child or encourage them to read every day. Practice math skills in your everyday activities. (telling time, counting money, etc.)

23 How parents can help Establish a time and quiet place for your child to do homework and review homework. Look through your child’s book bag each day to check for notes or homework
