5 Last year, we created a workgroup in the Reform Support Network focused on sustainability U.S. Department of Education5 Work Group Purpose:  Support work group in identifying key body of work that must be sustained in order to reach the State’s student achievement goals.  Assess the current sustainability of that body of work against comprehensive criteria.  Take action to ensure the work is sustained.  Empower staff to manage progress on sustainability strategies using performance management systems and processes.  Contribute learnings within the Work Group and to other States. Comprised of six states – each focused on sustaining different aspects of the work, yet invested in common approaches Hawaii Georgia Delaware Massachusetts New York Maryland

8 Before beginning to use the tools, let’s clarify the terminology U.S. Department of Education8  A priority goal is one of a subset of student-outcome related goals that is most critical to achieve  A priority reform is a body of work that an SEA is undertaking in order to achieve one or more of its priority goals (e.g. implementing college and career ready standards, ensuring quality data systems, implementing new educator evaluation systems).  A sustainable reform is a priority reform that is durable, adaptive, and persistently focused on priority goals for improved student growth in the face of changing conditions.

11 Performance management is a crucial piece of sustainability U.S. Department of Education11 Performance management is a systemic approach to ensure quality and progress toward organizational goals by aligning structures, processes and routines through a set of reinforcing activities that enable an agency to methodically and routinely monitor the connection between the work underway and the outcomes sought.

19 Exercise: Reflect on the sustainability of a reform/project U.S. Department of Education19 ▪ Identify an aspect of your program you are interested in ensuring is sustainable ▪ Use the 2-page rubric, reflect on the elements of the rubric that are the top 2 strengths for your project in preparing for sustainability and your top 2 challenges – these should be specific rows of the rubric ▪ Post 2 green dots for your strengths and 2 red dots for your challenges on a nearby sheet of flipchart paper WhatHowTime ▪ Individually or in small groups ▪ 10 minutes ▪ 2-page rubric summary ▪ Green and red dots ▪ Flipchart paper Materials

20 Discussion: Common strengths and challenges  Discuss the common strengths and challenges you see on the flipchart with those sitting around you  Consider: Is there anything to learn from one another’s strengths and challenges? U.S. Department of Education20

21 Discussion: Addressing identified challenges  Consider how you could address the identified challenges in your project’s sustainability  Share and discuss with those sitting nearby  Identify at least one next step (per person) and record it on a post-it.
