1 MAKING ENDS MEET GRADING RUBRIC STUDENTS: This is an exact copy of the sheet I’ll be using to grade your project. Use this as a tool to assess the strengths and weaknesses of your final project! POWERPOINT SLIDESHOW: (90 points: Each slide is worth 5 points). Be sure that the information on each slide is fully explained! You MUST document all of your research. Provide the link to your information in the note section of each slide! Not doing this will result in a loss of points! Spelling and grammar must also be correct on every slide. I will subtract one point for each of these types of errors so proofread carefully!  _______ ABOUT ME SLIDE – answered each question fully. Included pictures (one of you is required. Can also include one of your university and/or your city).  _______ INCOME SLIDE – Listed a realistic job title & starting salary. Explained what you are doing for your career. Try to include job title and a brief job description. Added a job related picture).  _______ TAXES SLIDE – Explained why taxes come out of your check and their role in our society. Correctly calculated & displayed your tax amount. Displayed net pay after taxes.  _______ SAVINGS SLIDE – Explained the importance of saving and what you are saving for Correctly calculated yearly and monthly savings and displayed on slide.  _______ APARTMENT SLIDE(S) – Explained where they live, talked about your place giving specific details, showed how much it costs, included amount for renter’s insurance. Included pictures.  _______ TRANSPORTATION SLIDE – Explained your choice: New, used or leased car OR public transportation. Included all other relevant information. (i.e. monthly payments for transportation, insurance, gas etc…). Included a picture.  _______ DEBT PAYMENTS – Show total tuition cost (undergrad and grad school if applicable). Tuition costs required even if you have help paying for it! (parents, scholarships, grant money etc…) Explained how you paid for your education. Listed, and explained, the total amount of student debt you borrowed. Showed the payment plan (# of years, interest rate) and monthly payment amount.  _______ FOOD/HOUSEHOLD ITEMS SLIDE – FOLLOWED INSTRUCTIONS! Properly displayed and totaled each of your food and household choices. Explained your decisions. Included a picture.  _______ PHONE SLIDE – Explained choices regarding phones. Listed monthly expenses for standard phone line, cell phones and/or prepaid calling cards. Included a picture.  _______ UTILITIES SLIDE – Provided a realistic monthly allowance for heating/electricity/water bills. Explained where they got your estimated amount from. Included a picture.  _______ PERSONAL CARE SLIDE – Provided a realistic monthly allowance for personal care. Explained why your number is realistic. Included a picture.  _______ CLOTHING BUDGET SLIDE – Provided a realistic monthly allowance for clothing. Explained your number in relation to your job. Made it clear they priced out clothes. Included a picture.  _______ TV/COMPUTER SLIDE – Explained your choices regarding cable and internet. Provided realistic monthly expenses and a picture.  _______ ENTERTAINMENT SLIDE – Followed instructions and correctly calculated an approximate monthly entertainment budget. Explained your choices. Included a picture or two.  _______ VACATION SLIDE – Explained trip. Included costs for transportation, lodging, food and entertainment. Divided the total by twelve to come up with a monthly budget number. Included a picture or two.  _______ BOTTOM LINE SLIDE – Followed instructions!. Were you initially over or under? By how much? If you had to make adjustments – what were they? Explained experiences with scarcity and tradeoffs. Explained what you’re doing with money left (especially if it’s over $200 per month).  _______ FINAL BUDGET CHART SLIDE – Correctly completed pie chart illustrating your final budget.  _______ CONCLUSION SLIDE(S) – Explained five things they learned during the course of this project. Used complete sentences. Demonstrated analysis including real numbers from your actual budget.

Feel free to use this as a tool to assess the strengths and weaknesses of your final project! EXCEL BUDGET SPREADSHEET: (20 points)  ______ Budget fits on one page. Added personalized header/footer. (Insert, Header/Footer). (2 point)  ______ Properly filled in all budget fields. (15 points)  ______ Adjusted totals are “in the black” (3 point) EXCEL BUDGET PIE GRAPH: (15 points)  ______Created Excel Pie Chart as a “New Sheet”. Correctly added a personalized header/footer. (1 point)  ______ Correctly created a Pie Graph illustrating your monthly budget. Legend at the bottom of the screen and display percents. (Worth 14 points).  UNIT STANDARDS: This unit was aimed specifically at numerous state and national learning standards. Among them are: Interpret information from a variety of career assessments to identify career interests and abilities. Apply a decision-making model and use career assessment information regarding interests and abilities to choose a career Gather, interpret, analyze, and refine data contained in symbols, pictures, charts, blueprints, and/or graphs. Analyze and synthesize information and data from multiple sources. Practice and demonstrate presentation skills using a variety of media and interpretive data. Estimate costs and prepare a detailed budget for a school-based or work-based project. Report the costs of various components of a budget and adjust budget items as needed. Demonstrate effective use of a variety of on-line technological resources. Demonstrate ability to adapt to different software applications, comparing and contrasting specific functions and applying them to different projects. Use of mathematical analysis to pose questions, seek answers, and develop solutions. Applying mathematics in real-world settings.  UNIT OBJECTIVES: By the end of this project I will be assessing whether or not you met the following objectives:  Students will determine how much money they have (based on entry-level job of their choice) and how much they can afford to spend.  Students will become familiar with creating a personal budget.  Students will create pie graphs and use these for drawing conclusions and making figure comparisons  Students will successfully create a personal budget in Microsoft Excel and learn how to manipulate figures to obtain “break-even” analysis.  Understand how to evaluate budget alternatives and the “opportunity cost” of their decisions.  Present and substantiate their budget analysis using PowerPoint and Excel.
