9 ASSESSMENT SUMMARY In the beginning of the unit students are given a question in order to activate their schema/prior knowledge about inventions and discoveries. Students have a discussion and about the impact inventions/discoveries have had on the world. The students list various inventions/discoveries and describe their purpose. Teacher is able to assess the students overall understanding about how inventions/discoveries have changed the world. Before, during and after the lesson teacher will use a K-W- H-L chart to help focus students learning and research. Students will discuss what they know and what questions they still have about inventions/discoveries. Teacher will format questions to give students a purpose for research. The students will also discuss what tools they can use to find the answers to their questions. Teacher and students will discuss methods of presenting and sharing their findings. Teacher will continue to format meaningful questions to keep students focused and on track. During the project teacher will use a research rubric to gauge student’s research skills and provide students with continuous feedback. After the unit teacher and students will revisit K-W-H-L chart to discuss what they learned about inventions/discoveries. Partners will share what information they found about their specific invention/discovery that they researched. Teacher will use an oral presentation rubric to assess students based on content and communication skills. The teacher will also use a writing rubric to assess the students written report based on content, language, organization and mechanics.
