Language Registers Communication Applications TEK: Communication Process A,C,D,E,I,J,K
2
Do you speak the same way at home as you speak in the classroom? Do you speak the same way to your friends as you do to your teacher? Would you speak the same way to a 4 year old as you do to an adult?
3
We all speak differently in different situations. These ways of speaking differently are called registers of language.
4
The important thing is to know how to speak in certain situations so you are appropriate in communicating.
5
The appropriate language register depends upon the audience (who), the topic (what), purpose (why) and location (where).
6
If we don’t recognize language registers we misuse language. When we misuse language, people get offended.
7
Every language has five registers: 1. Frozen 2. Formal 3. Consultative 4. Casual 5. Intimate
8
1. Static Characteristics : language that rarely or never changes. Frozen in time and content.
9
Examples of Static: Pledge of Allegiance The Lord’s Prayer Preamble to the US Constitution School Song Laws
13
2. Formal Register Characteristics: Used in formal settings One way in nature Follows a commonly accepted format
14
Examples of Formal Speeches Sermons Announcements Pronouncements made by a judge Newscast
17
3. Consultative Register Characteristics: Standard language used for two way communication. Formal; with societal expectations.
18
Examples of Consultative Doctor/Patient Lawyer/Client Teacher/Student Priest or Preacher/Congregation
21
Consultative is the level where teachers and students should function.
22
4. Casual Register Informal Characteristics: Used with peer group or friends.
24
Casual Slang, vulgarities and colloquialisms are normal. This is “group” language. One must be a “member” to engage in this register. (buddies, teammates, chats and emails, blogs, letters to friends.)
25
5. Intimate Register This communication is private. Reserved for close family members or intimate people. Husband/wife; boyfriend/girlfriend; siblings; parent children.
26
Intimate Excludes others Intimate pair invents its own code. Ex. – The movie “Ghost” – “ditto” Can you think of other examples?

31
The Universal Rule One can usually transition from one language register to an adjacent one without encountering repercussions. However, skipping one or more levels is usually considered inappropriate and even offensive or antisocial behavior.
32
Example: The Minister at a Wedding ceremony suddenly says “Hey dude, ya wanna marry this chick?” Going from frozen to casual register!!!
33
Now you try…. Multiple, visually impaired rodents; observe how they engage in mobile exercise. In the past they pursued the agricultural agent’s spouse who in turn amputated their posterior portion. This is an occurrence that you haven’t seen in your lifetime. Multiple, visually impaired rodents.
