3.  Address all parts of the prompt in the intro.  Specifically state the meaning of the work.  Provide plenty of text evidence to prove your thesis.  Write in 3 rd person. No 1 st (I, me) or 2 nd (you).  Do not say “the reader”.  Write about literature in present tense. (Santiago is unaware of his fate.)  State the author’s full name and the book’s title in your intro. (Book titles are underlined; call him “Marquez” after 1 st time.)  You may use your notes and the character list

5. 2 Purposes: 1. Links to thesis. It develops one major point in support of the thesis; it is a smaller topic which directly relates to the thesis. 2. Introduces the subject of the paragraph. It states the dominating idea that the paragraph will develop. Example:  Thesis: In The Metamorphosis, Gregor’s death demonstrates that one person’s change cannot help but affect those around him.  Topic Sentence: Gregor’s passing is a closing for the man himself, but it also serves as a catalyst for a new beginning for his family.
