3 A few months before the eruption USGS set up a base camp to monitor the mountain in Vancouver, Washington May 18, 1980 St. Helens volcano erupts sending a lateral blast that devastates the north flank Cascade affect follows, devastation spans 600 km in a fan shaped pattern leaving trees flattened in its wake An avalanche of debris, lahars, and pyroclastic flows followed

4 The Tragedy that occurred on May 18, 1980 Sunday 8:32 am Mt St. Helens erupted killing 57 Reid Blackburn KA7AMF and Jerry Martin W6TQF (ARES)(RACES) David Alexander Johnston volcanologist for USGS stationed 5 miles from the summit “Vancouver, Vancouver, This Is IT” Jerry’s post was 10 miles from the volcano using the tactical callsign “Coldwater 2” he warned of the eruption ( 2m repeater) “It’s Going to Get Me Too”

5 Jerry Martin’s post was overtaken by molten ash and mudflows his body was never recovered but presumed dead Reid Blackburn was stationed closer to the blast site his body was recovered from his car David Johnston body was never recovered Johnston’s Observatory is named in his Honor In remembrance of their Great Sacrifice, HAMS nationwide commemorate the occasion every May 18th by using the event call sign “W7W”

6 “Ike” makes landfall in Galveston Bay as a Category 2 hurricane 110 mph winds devastate the area 17 ft. waves inundate Galveston’s Seawall Massive traffic build up from residents trying to evacuate the area 1.5 million Houstonians are without electricity

7 HAM Radio operators were able to offer their services to FEMA They were also able to help many residents communicate with loved ones Glen Rekeweg with ARES along with others were able to utilize a system called Airmail that lets operators use their radios to send emails To conserve batteries they would only go on air every 30 minutes ARES had 34 hours of continuous communication with 24 operators in Lufkin providing communications for people fleeing the area Motorola 2 meter 100 watt repeater at a 480 antenna tower site Bill Swan AARL’s North Texas Emergency Coordinator K5MWC set up operations at 15 Red Crosses utilizing a 2 meter link that was opened for FEMA
