2. Definition : Onomatopoeia (on-o-mat- o-PEA-a)  is the imitation of natural sounds in word form. These words help us form mental pictures about things, people, or places.  E.g. boom, buzz, crackle, gurgle, hiss, pop, sizzle, snap, swoosh, whir, zip

Types of onomatopoeia:  direct onomatopoeia: the sound of the word resembles the sound that it produces. examples- pop, hiss, whirr, splash, rustle, zoom, bang, shriek, thud, ding-dong, gargle, crunch.  associated onomatopoeia: the name of a thing, animal or object that resembles a sound associated with it. examples- cuckoo (and other birds), bubble, whip, scratch, splatter, cackle, cough, whisper.  exemplary onomatopoeia: the amount and character of the physical work used by a speaker when verbalizing a word that matches its meaning. examples- nimble, dart, slothful, sluggish, mumble.
