What is poetry? Poetry is, first of all, a communication - a thought or message conveyed by the writer to the reader. It is not only an act of creation, but also an act of sharing.

Stanza / Verse Stanza / Verse A section of poetry separated from the sections before and after it; a verse “paragraph.” How many stanza are there in the poem The Road Not Taken? 4 How many verses are there in each stanza? 5

Rhyme Rhyme is a pattern of words that contain similar sounds. Example: go/show/glow/know/though In poetry, rhythm, broadly speaking, is a recognizable pulse, or "recurrence," which gives a distinct beat to a line and also gives it a shape.

Theme The central idea of a work. The theme is the general idea or insight about life that a writer wishes to express. All of the elements of literary terms contribute to theme. A simple theme can often be stated in a single sentence.

Tone Tone טוֹן, נִימָה, סִגְנוֹן The author’s attitude toward his or her subject. For example, a tone could be pessimistic, optimistic, angry, serious, humorous, sarcastic, ironic, satirical, objective.
