Japanese Imperialism Japan wanted to establish an empire
Unhappy with the situation in Asia needed land to support growing population Lacked sufficient raw materials and markets for industries

Japanese Expansion Unhappy in the 1930s because they too felt the effects of the Great Depression Did not stop them from seizing land in Manchuria in 1931 Japans military strengthens in govt as the Depression deepens 1937 Japan resumes aggression in China Despite US help most of China falls under the control of Japan

Japan signs treaties with Germany, Italy in the Tripartite Pact in 1940 1941 aligns themselves with the Soviet Union Looks to the South East Asia & the Dutch East Indies Feel strong enough to challenge European and Americans for control of Asia US grows concerned 1938 FDR begins to build up the navy in the Pacific Moves American fleet to Pearl Harbor

America’s Response Wary at first Had enough problems at home
Isolationism & neutrality Cash & carry goods sold (arms) to Allies must be paid in cash Roosevelt tried to help the allies Afraid of German aggression- laws are repealed & acts are passed to help the allies 1940 the draft was enacted

Lend-Lease Act: March authorized the president to aid any nation whose defense he believed was vital to American Security Japanese want control of French colonies in Indochina by 1941 they occupy them Roosevelt freezes Japanese financial assets in US & cut off all trade with Japan

Warning Signs Leaders look for ways to avoid war
Diplomats in Tokyo urge FDR to compromise Negotiations take place, ultimatums are made Japan decides their goals for Asia are threatened by American Fleet in Hawaii Dec. 7, 1941 Japan attacks Pearl 7 am 2 hours & 45 minutes later 2,400 dead and 1,200 wounded “a day that will live in infamy,”- 3 days later the US is at War
