What’s the problem Peer auto-restart causes –Peer to go up/down rapidly –Shakes the infrastructure Cause: –Bad prefix resent by peer –Causes local peer to come up, receive back junk, and go back down Issue: Was in draft-14 of BGP draft, pulled to separate document

Types of Idle Hold Down Timers 3 types of Timers –Exponential damping (like route flap damping) –Step-wise damping –No damping

Mechanisms Mechanisms exist in FSM –Connect-Retry count –Idle Hold Timer –Perform persistent peer oscillation damping action Sub-state within Idle state to –Hold down while Idle Hold timer is running –Allow manual configuration to take out of state
