2  Group of American poets and novelists of 1950s and 1960s whose work expressed their alienation from society  Term suggests they felt “beaten” by American life  Romantically rebelled against American culture- especially American middle-class values, purposelessness of modern society and need for withdrawal and protest

3 Beat Generation continued  Expressed this rebellion through literary works, particularly through loose structure and slang diction  Relied on experimentation, primitivism and inspiration from jazz

4 Beat Generation continued  Spiritual liberation, sexual “revolution” or “liberation”  Liberation of the world from censorship  Demystification of laws against drugs  Spread of ecological consciousness  Wanted to pull down all establishments of American life  Wanted to attack, disorganize, reorganize the structure of human sensitivity through revolutionary use of language
