2 A. Causes of the Reformation 1. The Renaissance began emphasizing secular ideas 2. The Printing Press made it easy to spread those ideas 3. Church leaders seemed corrupt and extravagant 4. Middle class resented paying “Church Tax” 5. Some church leaders seemed like they had more authority than Bible 6. The Pope was constantly involved in politics – many leaders resent this 7. Selling of indulgences (forgiveness)

3 8. Catholic Monk named Martin Luther challenges church a. Luther writes 95 Theses outlining problems w/ Church b. Luther argues against selling of indulgences and: Only faith needed for salvation – no purgatory Bible/Church services should be in people’s language Bible is final authority – not Pope or church leaders Individual people not priests interpret the Bible
