1 Thurs Feb 6th: Luther Starts the Reformation Objective: Examine how Martin Luther created change in Europe. Discussion Question: What is the one thing about your parents that you would want to change? Do you think it would be difficult or easy to get them to change?

2 What was the Reformation? Started in Germany Started in Germany Religious Revolution Religious Revolution  Started to question and challenge the Catholic church  Believed the Catholic church lost sight of its spiritual mission

3 Causes of the Reformation Renaissance emphasis on the individual & challenged Church authority Printing press spreads secular ideas Ruler’s resent popes’ attempts to control them Northern merchants resented paying taxes to Rome

6 Luther Starts the Reformation The Response to Luther  The Pope’s Threatens, then excommunicates Luther  The Emperor’s Opposition Holy Roman Emperor Charles V is staunchly Catholic Charles issues the Edict of Worms declaring  Luther an outlaw and heretic, makes it illegal to house or feed Luther.

7 The 95 Theses – Posted on October 31, 1517  Formal statements that attacked the “pardon- merchants”  The actions would lead to Reformation. Luther taught three ideas People could win salvation through faith only All church teachings should be based on the words of the bible All people of faith were equal, no need for priests to interpret the Bible.
