3 Maximum $2,000 for conferences, seminars Enable researchers to become up-to-date with advances in the field; and Provide an opportunity for new researchers to interact and form collaborative relationships with other researchers and significant contributors to the field. 4 Masters - 2 years $17,500/yr - $35,000 Doctoral - 3 years $20,000/yr - $60,000 develop capacity in Ontario by supporting graduate students who undertake PG research in their studies upon completion of the Doctoral degree, assist recipients in applying for Level I and Level II Research Awards.Level ILevel II Timing: Open in March, Close in May, Notifications in June Evaluation: Review Panel comprised of 2 external reviewers; funding decision made by staff

5 Two years, $42,000/yr - $84,000 provide the highest quality researchers in the gambling field the opportunity to continue their work toward becoming successful scientists Open in March, Close in May, Notifications in June Evaluation: Panel of three external reviewers, funding decision made by panel

6 One year, $10,000 maximum - No overhead Purpose: Increase the capacity of researchers to compete successfully for larger research awards; Remove barriers; Encourage non-traditional researchers to enter the problem gambling field; and Assist in the development of collaborative partnerships. Timing: Open year round until budget allocation has been awarded Evaluation: Staff Previous

7 One year - $42,000 ($35,000 + 20% indirect) Purpose: stand-alone research project or pilot project; preliminary research in preparation for a Level III research project, such as instrument development and testing; and research tasks subsequent to a major research project, such as follow-up testing, or secondary data analysis. Timing: Three solicitations scheduled to coincide with the academic calendar. (two in FY2010-2011) Evaluation: Scientific Review Panel of two external reviewers, Research Consultant and one staff member

8 One year - $ 210,000 maximum ($175,000 + 20% indirect) Purpose: strengthen treatment & prevention practice; strike a balance between applied & theoretical research; encourage innovation and creativity in research; involve community partnerships to the extent possible. Timing: solicitations in April and October Evaluation/application in two-stages: Letter of Intent (LOI) - Reviewed by RRC Proposal - Reviewed by three external peers; Funding recommendations by RRC for Board approval Previous

9 Three years - $540,000 maximum ($450,000 + 20% Indirect) Purpose: designed for research requiring a sustained period of funding (up to three years) Timing: One solicitation in October Evaluation/application in two-stages: Letter of Intent (LOI) - Reviewed by RRC Proposal - Reviewed by three external peers; Funding recommendations by RRC for Board approval

10 Five years - $500,000 ($100,000/yr max of five years) 75,000 to support senior investigator, $5,000 training, $20,000 admin support Purpose: support interdisciplinary teams with focused, long term research agendas Timing: by special solicitation only Evaluation: Review Panel comprised of RRC and two external reviewers. Funding decision made by RRC * The ETA funded in 2007 was reviewed only by RRC Previous

11 $2,000 maximum Purpose: ensure findings reach end users; plan methods for transfer of new research knowledge; identify approaches to effectively apply new research knowledge; develop pilot projects to test new evidence-based practice. Timing: Open year-round until budget allocation has been awarded Evaluation: Staff

12 $10,000 maximum Purpose – pilot projects, including but not limited to: integrate a new protocol or screen into professional / clinical practice; add controls or changes to policy or practice in response to information about vulnerable groups; change clinical protocols to better manage PG sub-types. Timing: Open year-round until budget allocation has been awarded Evaluation: Staff Previous

13 Structure: committee of the Board comprised of up to four Board Members, the Chief Executive Officer and up to three research consultants to make recommendations for the funding of Level III and Level IV Research Awards, Emerging Team Awards (ETAs), Directed Research submissions and other types of research awards as determined by the Board of Directors members are not eligible to apply for funding or to participate in a proposal submitted for funding during their term on the committee

14 Responsibilities: Develop criteria, policy and procedures for the processing and adjudication of Level III and IV research submissions (Stage 1: Letters of Intent and Stage 2: Research Plans), Emerging Team Awards, Directed Research submissions and other types research awards as determined by the Board of Directors; In consultation with the CEO, oversee the resolution of problems with funded projects and requests for changes that exceed parameters for staff approval Meet annually with the CEO to discuss the Peer Reviewer list to determine the composition of the listing and discuss any matters pertaining to membership.

15 Review Process: for a regular or special solicitation, RRC: Stage 1 – evaluates and scores Letters of Intent for Level III and IV Awards and determines which applicants will be invited to submit a full research proposal Stage 2 – proposals for Level III and IV Awards, ETAs or Directed Research are each evaluated by three external peer reviewers Stage 2 – considers the average score and feedback from the peer reviewers, and, in compliance with Board criteria and policies, makes recommendations to the Board to fund specific research proposals
