What We will Discuss Today What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest? How serious is it? Who is at Risk? What is the Solution? How can Help You to Save Lives?

What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest A potentially fatal heart condition where the heart suddenly stops due to an abnormal rhythm. Survival chances depend on how quickly the help is provided (>90% in the 1 st min. to <5% after 10 mins*). Survival rate goes down rapidly as time progresses. If help is not provided within 10 mins survival chances decrease below 5%. Survival rate goes down rapidly as time progresses. If help is not provided within 10 mins survival chances decrease below 5%. * American Heart Association

Rhythm Behind Sudden Cardiac Arrest Upto 95% of Sudden Cardiac Arrests are caused by an abnormal heart rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation (VF). The heart stops and the oxygen supply to the brain stops. Permanent brain damage occurs in around 10 mins and death follows. * American Heart Journal – 2005 ** World Health Organization – 2008

How Serious is Sudden Cardiac Arrest? Pakistan One of the leading causes of death in Pakistan. More than 80,000 deaths per year*. That is more than 200 every day. And 1 every 7 minutes! Worldwide More than 350,000 per year in the US**. 140,000 deaths per year in the UK***. * World Health Organization – 2004 Statistics ** American Heart Association *** Meditrain, UK

Who is at Risk? Family History of Sudden Death. Coronary Artery Disease or Heart Failure. (1 out of 4 middle-aged adult Pakistanis have cardiac disease, which is 20 million people*) Previous Heart Attack. Obesity. Diabetes (6.9 million Pakistanis effected**). * American Heart Journal – 2005 ** World Health Organization – 2008

THE SOLUTION

Is there a Solution? Yes, there is… The only treatment for Ventricular Fibrillation is electrical Defibrillation – shocking the heart into a regular rhythm. This has to be done within 10 minutes to be effective. Survival rates can be improved from <5% up to 74% by doing the following: –Providing Basic Life Support to ensure that the minimal oxygen supply to the brain continues. –Early Defibrillation using a defibrillator, so that the heart can restart its function. Timing is the key. * American Heart Journal – 2005 ** World Health Organization – 2008

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Highlights Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are designed to be used by trained laypersons where speed and simplicity count. Have to be made available so that it reaches the victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in less than 3-5 minutes for greater chances of survival. Trained laypersons have successfully used AEDs in various public places like offices, airports, malls, health clubs, etc. Data shows that it can dramatically increase chances of survival following a Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

AED for the Workplace Long active hours spent at workplace. Risk of cardiac arrest from industrial accidents. OSHA recommends placement of AEDs in workplaces, factories and other locations as cardiac arrest can happen due to: –Heart Attack –Electrocution –Insufficient Oxygen –Work-related Blunt Trauma United States Department of Labor Occupational Safety & Health Administration
