Human Evolution Graphic Timeline
3
Australopithecus Afarensis “Lucy”
2.7 – 4 Million years ago. Earliest known member of the Hominid family. Overall body size, brain size and skull shape closely resemble that of a chimpanzee. Thought to have lived along the northern Rift valley of east Africa.
4
Australopithecus Robustus
1 – 2.2 Million years ago. Believed to be small brained compared to humans. Huge teeth, Skulls, and Jaws were thought to be used to eat and chew through tough plants.
5
Homo Habilis 1.6 – 2.2 Million years ago.
Earliest known species of the genus Homo “Human Species” 30% larger brain then that of an Australopithecus Afarensis. Male Skull significantly larger than the female.
6
Homo Erectus 0.4 – 2 Million years ago.
Much larger brain. Almost 50% bigger than Homo Habilis. Body is remarkably modern looking and the first species to stand over 6 feet tall. First species to create and use stone tools to complete tasks. Possibly used “Baby Talk” to communicate.
7
Homo Sapiens 200,000 – 400,000 years ago.
Believed to be the earliest form of our own species. Wooden tools and weapons are evidence that they possibly lived a hunting lifestyle.
8
Neanderthalensis 30,000 – 200,000 years ago.
Believed to have experienced thoughts and feelings a lot like us due to their brain growing to a little larger than ours is now. Scientists still debate whether they are a closely related sub-species of modern humans or represent a collateral line of late Homo erectus. Looked, moved, and behaved very similar to us now.
9
Archaic Homo Sapiens Present – 30,000 years ago.
Humans as we know them. Brain size a little smaller than that of the Neanderthals. Due to natural selection and chance mutation the brain developed to link the left and right side giving us the ability to multi-task Smaller teeth, and Jaw compared to earlier species. The Smartest of the species thus far.
