2 Joy Division New OrderBlue MondayAlbumsNow LOVE WILL TEAR US APART When routine bites hard, and ambitions are low And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow And we're changing our ways, taking different roads Then love, love will tear us apart again Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side Is my timing that flawed - our respect run so dry? Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives Love, love will tear us apart again You cry out in your sleep - all my failings expose There's a taste in my mouth, as desperation takes hold Just that something so good just can't function no more When love, love will tear us apart again.

3 The rise of a New Order When Joy Division's Ian Curtis committed suicide in May 1980 the three remaining members, Bernard Sumner (guitar, vocals), Peter Hook ( bass) and Stephen Morris (drums) continued under the name New Order. Sumner took over vocal duties and the trio embarked on a low-key tour of the USA, intent on continuing as an entity independent of the massive reputation Joy Division had achieved shortly before their demise. Later that same year they recruited Morris's girlfriend, Gillian Gilbert (keyboards, guitar) and wrote and rehearsed their debut, Movement, which was released the following year. The first single, 'Ceremony', written by Joy Division, was a UK Top 40 hit in the spring of 1981, and extended the legacy of their previous band. Joy DivisionNew OrderBlue MondayAlbumsNow

4 Blue Monday The biggest selling 12 inch single ever Released as a 12 inch single only, the track was destined for club DJ's and not the general record buying public. Despite no radio air-play or promotion the track sold in amazing quantities for such a format. Even more surprising since the band only had a small underground, indie following. The track is widely regarded as a crucial link between Seventies disco and the Dance/House boom that took off at the end of the Eighties. Kick-starting the UK dance scene it also opened the door of dance music to a new audience. Joy DivisionNew OrderBlue MondayAlbumsNow
