Why High Visibility Rain Wear? Providing workers maximum visibility while keeping them dry in foul weather situations where vehicular traffic poses hazards to their work.

Bureau of Labor Statistics BLS reported in 2004, of the 2,460 transportation related incidents resulting in fatalities, 15% were caused by a worker being struck by a moving vehicle. This statistic rose by a total of 11% from 2003 to 2004.

Preusser, “Experimental Evaluation of Alternative Conspicuity-Enhancement Techniques for Pedestrians and Bicyclists,” Journal of Safety Research, Volume 17, pp. 1-12, 1986. 2 “Decision Sight Distance for Highway Design and Traffic Control Requirements,” Report number FHWA-RD-78-78.

ANSI 107-2004 A voluntary standard that specifies performance requirements for high-visibility safety apparel and headwear PPE. These performance requirements include color, retroreflection, minimum surface areas, as well as the suggested configuration of the materials.

What Performance Class do I fall into? Class 1 Suggested Performance Class: 1 typical, 2 under certain conditions. For Occupational Activities which: Permit full and undivided attention to approaching traffic Provide ample separation from vehicular traffic Permit optimum conspicuity in backgrounds not complex Vehicle and equipment speeds not exceeding 25 mph. Class 2 Suggested Performance Class: 2 typical, 1 or 3 upon certain conditions. For occupational activities where risk levels exceed those in Class1 such as where: Greater visibility to inclement weather conditions. Complex backgrounds are present. Performing task which divert attention away from traffic. Close proximity to traffic and vehicle speed exceed those in Class 1. Class 3 Suggested Performance Class: 2 or 3 typical based upon certain conditions. For Occupational Activities which: Exposed to significantly higher speeds and/or reduced sight distances. Worker and vehicle operator have high task loads placing worker in danger; or The wearer must be conspicuous through the full range of body motions at a minimum of 1280 feet, and identifiable as a person. ANSI 107-2004 Appendix B: Suggested Performance Class Guidelines

Examples of pedestrian workers Scenarios Class 1 Suggested Performance Class: 1 typical, 2 under certain conditions. Worker directing vehicle operators to parking/service locations Workers retrieving shopping carts from parking area. Roadside “right-of-way” or sidewalk maintenance workers; and Workers exposed to warehouse equipment traffic hazards. Delivery vehicle drivers. Class 2 Suggested Performance Class: 2 typical, 1 or 3 upon certain conditions. Roadway Construction workers Utility workers Survey Crews Railway workers Law enforcement personnel Forestry Workers School crossing guards Parking and/or toll gate personnel Airport baggage/ground crew Emergency response personnel Class 3 Suggested Performance Class: 2 or 3 typical based upon certain conditions. Roadway construction personnel Utility workers Emergency Response Personnel Flagging Crews Survey Crews ANSI 107-2004 Appendix B: Suggested Performance Class Scenarios

ANSI 107 Compliance in Rainwear When wearing a Performance Class 2 or 3 jacket and a Performance Class E pant together the overall classification for the Ensemble is a Class 3 + Class 3 Therefore, when wearing an ANSI 107 compliant rain suit, you will be in a minimum Class 3 suit.
