Revival and Reformation Our Goal {5} “A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs.” —Selected Messages 1:121. Heaven places priority on revival. What could be more important?

Revival and Reformation Lesson 3, July 20 Revival and Reformation Lesson 3, July 20 The Word: The Foundation of Revival
7
The World: The Foundation of Revival Key Text Psalm 119:154 NKJV “Plead my cause and redeem me; revive me according to Your word.”
8
The World: The Foundation of Revival Initial Words {31} We will study the role of the Bible in revival and how God’s Word can make a life-changing difference in us if we surrender ourselves in faith and obedience to its precepts and truths.
9
The World: The Foundation of Revival Quick Look 1. The Word’s Creative Power (Psalm 119:50) 2. The Word and Jesus (Luke 24:27, 32) 3. The Word and Faith (Romans 10:17)
10
Psalm 119:50 NKJV “This is my comfort in my affliction, for your word has given me life.” The World: The Foundation of Revival 1. The Word’s Creative Power
11
Revived Through It {32} 1. David found courage and strength. 2. He discovered hope and guidance. 3. Brought light to his darkened mind. 4. Nourished his famished heart. 5. Clung to promise of deliverance. 6. Clung to promise of forgiveness. 7. Clung to promise of guidance. “Your word has given me life.” Revival is finding new life in God’s word.
12
1.The Word’s Creative Power Revived Through It {33} There is value in wise human counsel. The problem is that human counsel does not carry with it the power to accomplish the kind of change that God’s Word can.
13
1.The Word’s Creative Power Revived Through It {33} “The creative energy that called the worlds into existence is in the word of God. This word imparts power; it begets life. Every command is a promise; accepted by the will, received into the soul, it brings with it the life of the Infinite One. It transforms the nature, and re-creates the soul in the image of God.” Education 126
14
1.The Word’s Creative Power Revived Through It {33} Does little good for spiritual life: casual reading to prove one’s own position to convince others of their mistakes Change comes: prayerfully read ask the Holy Spirit for power ask the God re-create us Jesus’ teachings—part of our lives
15
The World: The Foundation of Revival 2. The Word and Jesus Luke 24:27, 32 NKJV “And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. And they said to one another, ‘Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us in the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’ ”
16
2. The Word and Jesus Functions of the Word; the Spirit {34} The Word of God and the Holy Spirit bears witness of Jesus. The Spirit leads us to a deeper experience with Jesus through His Word. The purpose of the Holy Spirit in revival is not primarily to manifest Himself through supernatural signs and wonders but to exalt Jesus through His Word.
17
2. The Word and Jesus Functions of the Word; the Spirit {34} The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not about our power to accomplish great miracles. It is about God’s power to transform our lives—and that’s what revival and reformation are all about.
18
2. The Word and Jesus Functions of the Word; the Spirit {34} Any so-called “revival” based solely on external feelings or experience is shallow at best, deceptive at worst. When revival is rooted in the Word of God, it is an experience that lasts and makes a difference in our lives and in the lives of the people around us.
19
The World: The Foundation of Revival 3. The Word and Faith Romans 10:17 NKJV “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
20
3. The Word and Faith Biblical Faith {35} Speaking of the time just before His return, Jesus said, “ ‘When the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?’ ” Faith will be in short supply in the last days. Is faith believing that God will give us anything we want? Is faith centered in our desires? Believing we will receive it if we only believe hard enough?
21
3. The Word and Faith Biblical Faith {35} Faith, true faith, is always focused on God’s will, not on our wishes. It is trusting in God, believing in His promises, and acting on His Word. Our faith grows as we listen to God’s Word and put it into practice (Romans 10:17; James 2:17, 18).
22
3. The Word and Faith Biblical Faith {35} Opening our minds to the teachings of God’s Word builds faith; and doing what God says—even if it is contrary to our personal desires— prepares us to receive the fullness of the Spirit’s power.
23
The World: The Foundation of Revival Final Words {37} None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict.” The Great Controversy 593, 594 “In order to endure the trial before them, they must understand the will of God as revealed in His word; they can honor Him only as they have a right conception of His character, government, and purposes, and act in accordance with them.
