“Worship the King” Part 7 Easter in an age of Terror Matthew 28:1-15

Easter in an age of Terror Easter confronts us with the essential question: Is the Christian faith natural or is it supernatural?

Easter in an age of Terror

What does the Easter message have to say to a world living in that kind of fear and terror?

Chaos and terror There was a violent earthquake – v.2 The guards were so afraid … that they shook and became like dead men. – v.4

Chaos and terror The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, - v.5 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid… - v.8

Creativity and truth There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

Creativity and truth His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

Creativity and truth The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.

Creativity and truth Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' - vv. 2-3; 5-7

Creativity and truth Just like the creation in genesis the resurrection is a display of the creative power of God!

The angel said four things: You have come to the right place. The angel announced the reason for the empty grave

The angel said four things: Go see for yourselves. Go quickly and tell his disciples:

Confidence and transformation So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

Confidence and transformation The women have a confidence that is real! Afraid…yet filled with joy.

Confidence and transformation Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.

Confidence and transformation Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." - vv. 8-10

It makes sense that they worshipped him. Resurrection power operates in the midst of death. Resurrection power is irresistible. Resurrection power makes no noise.

Bottom Line: The defining moment of our lives is Easter Sunday- the resurrection of Jesus Christ because the resurrection of Jesus from the dead changes everything!

Matthew 28:11-15 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.

Matthew 28:11-15 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, "

Matthew 28:11-15 "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.' If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble."

Matthew 28:11-15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

Matthew 28:11-15 And as long as some else is paying for it many people will work and play in the delusional self made world.

Matthew 28:11-15 Our contribution is to believe and receive the life giving power of God through Jesus Christ our Risen Lord.
