I can correctly use commonly confused verbs.

sit / set Sit = “to be seated” or “to rest”; no direct object Past: satPast Participle: sat Set = “to place” or “to put”; usually has direct object Past: setPast Participle: set Memory Trick: You tell a dog to “Sit.” This command has no direct object. Examples: You cannot sit on the table. (no direct object) I will set this figurine on the table. (figurine = direct object)

rise / raise Rise = “to move upward” or “to go up”; no direct object Past: rosePast Participle: risen Raise = “to life up”; usually has direct object Past: raisedPast Participle: raised Examples: Tina watched the balloon rise into the sky. (no direct object). She raised her hand to answer. (hand = direct object).

lie / lay Lie = “to recline,” “to be in a place,” or “to remain lying down”; no direct object Past: layPast Participle: lain Lay = “to put down” or “to place”; usually has direct object Past: laidPast Participle: laid Examples: I will lie down for a nap. (no direct object) Will you lay the baby in his crib? (baby = direct object)
