Tall tales became popular on the American frontier where isolation and loneliness led to the exaggerated stories often told by the pioneers. One way pioneers conveyed their astonishment at their new surroundings and the events of their lives was through tall tales. What are some examples of tall tales?

Write about it! Tell your own tall tale about one of your teachers. It must be three paragraphs. Write it in your journal!

Concept/Question Board Create a “tall tale” about the American West. Use SP p. 123 as your GO (prewriting). Write your final story on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to illustrate your tall tale. Comprehension Create 10 True/False statements. At least 4 must be false and explain why it is false. Vocabulary Create a crossword puzzle using all of the selection vocabulary words.
