DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS WIN THE ELECTION… Each elector who voted for Jefferson also voted for Burr, resulting in a tied electoral vote. The election was then put into the hands of the outgoing House of Representatives which, after 35 votes in which neither Jefferson nor Burr obtained a majority, elected Jefferson on the 36th ballot. LOUISANA PURCHASE By purchasing the land for $15 million (about 3 cents/acre), the U.S. doubled the size of its country!

Thomas Jefferson asked Congress for money to finance an expedition to the west to explore all the new land they had purchased from the French. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were chosen to lead about 40 men on the expedition
