7-1 6 th grade math Customary Units of Measurement

Objective To convert one unit of customary measurement to another. Why? To know how to convert measurements used in the United States (mostly): units of weight, length, and capacity.

California State Standards AF 2.1: Convert from one unit of measurement to another (e.g., from feet to miles, …) MR 1.0: Make decisions about how to approach problems.

Vocabulary Customary Units of Length Inch (in) = basic unit of length in customary system Foot (ft) = unit of length in customary system equal to 12 in. Yard (yd) = unit of length in customary system equal to 36 in. or 3 ft. Mile (mi) = unit of length in customary system equal to 5280 ft. or 1760 yd.

Vocabulary. Customary Units of Weight Ounce (oz.) = the basic unit of weight in the customary system Pound (lb.) = unit of weight in customary system equal to 16 oz. Ton (T) = unit of weight in customary system equal to 2000 lbs.

Vocabulary. Customary Units of Capacity Fluid ounce (fl. oz.) = unit of capacity in customary system equal to 2 tablespoons (Tbs) Cup (c) = a unit of capacity in the customary system equal to 8 oz (2 c = 1 pt) Pint (p) = a unit of capacity in the customary system equal to 2 c Quart (qt) = a unit of capacity in the customary system equal to 4 c Gallon (gal) = a unit of capacity in the customary system equal to 4 qt

Conversions in Customary Units Custom units of length 1 ft =12 in 1 yd =36 in 1 yd =3 ft 1 mi =5280 ft 1 mi =1760 yd Custom units of weight 1 lb =16 oz 1 T =2000 lbs Customary units of capacity 1 c =8 fl. oz. 1 pt =16 oz 1 pt =2 c 1 qt =4 c 1 qt =2 pt 1 gal =4 qt

How to Solve Conversions 1) Decide the ‘magic number’ between the two units of measure. Write down the number between them 2) To change from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide 3) To change from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply. 4) Check your work for reasonableness. a) 36 ft = ___ yd ft < yd; divide magic number = 3 36 ÷ 3 = 12 36 ft = _12_ yd b) 36 ft = ___ in ft > in; multiply magic number = 12 36 x 12 = 432 36 ft = _432_ in

How to Solve More Conversions You might have to divide or multiply fraction or use remainders…. c) 20 oz = ____ lbs d) 21 ½ qt = ____ pt c) 20 oz = ____ lbs oz < lbs; divide magic number = 16 20 ÷ 16 = 1.25 or 1 ¼ 20 oz = _1.25_ lbs d) 21 ½ qt = ____ pt qt > pt; multiply magic number = 2 21.5 x 2 = or 43 x 2 2 1 21 ½ qt = _43_ pt

How to Solve More Conversions You might have to do multiple steps to get the answers …. e) 9 yd, 2 ft = ____ in f) 1 ¼ T = ___ lb g) 21 qt = ___ gal e) 9 yd, 2 ft = ____ in (9 x 36) + (2 x 12) 324 + 24 = 348 9 yd, 2 ft = _348_ in f) 1 ¼ T = ___ lb (1.25 x 2000) = 2500 1 ¼ T = _2500_ lb g) 21 qt = ___ gal (21 ÷ 4) = 5 r ¼ 21 qt = _5.25_ gal or 5 ¼ gal

Try It! 1)1 yd = ___ in, so 3 yd = __ in 2)1 ft = ___ in, so ⅓ ft = __ in 3)12 in = ___ ft, so 6 in = ___ ft 4)1 lb = ___ oz, so ¼ lb = ___ oz 1) 1 yd = _36_ in, so 3 yd = _108_ in x 2) 1 ft = _12_ in, so ⅓ ft = _4_ in ÷ 3) 12 in = _1_ ft, so 6 in = _½_ ft ÷ 4)1 lb = _16_ oz, so ¼ lb = _4_ oz ÷

Try Some More! 5)12 oz = ___ lb 6)1 gal = ___ pt 7)5 c = ___ pt 8)10 ½ lb = ___ oz 9)9 qt = ___ gal 10)1 pt = ___ fl oz 12) 2 oz = ___ lb 5)12 oz = ___ lb ÷ 16 = 0.75 or ¾ lb 6) 1 gal = ___ pt X 8 = 8 pt 7) 5 c = ___ pt ÷ 2 = 2.5 or 2 ½ pt 8) 10 ½ lb = ___ oz X 16 = 168 oz 9) 9 qt = ___ gal ÷ 4 = 2.25 or 2 ¼ gal 10) 1 pt = ___ fl oz X 16 = 16 fl oz 12) 2 oz = ___ lb 16 ÷ 128 = 0.125 or ⅛ lb.

Objective Review To convert one unit of customary measurement to another. Why? You now know how to convert measurements used in the United States (mostly): units of weight, length, and capacity. Remember to change a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply Remember to change a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide

Independent Practice Complete problems 13- 29 Copy original problem first. Show all work! If time, complete Mixed Review: 32-40 If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
