Unit 1 (Scientific Skills), Day 1 Measurement
2
Seating and Attendance (5 min) Student Actions: Seats will be changed today as needed Trial Run: eventually a permanent chart will be created Mrs. Larkin’s Actions: Pass out name tents Take Attendance
3
Agenda Seating and Attendance (5 min) Catalyst - SMART Goals (5 min) Critique Goals (5 min) Turn in Homework (1 min) Investigation – Measurement With Bodies (12 min) Explanation – Measurement Systems (20 min) Break (7 min) Lab – Measurement (40 min) Goal Reflection (5 min) Homework Explanation (Exam Explanation) (5 min) Homework Planner (2 min)
4
Catalyst: SMART Goals - Create (5 min) Side 2: Academic goal for the year Character goal for the year (think back to your catalyst!) SMART Goals should be: Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely Write goal in notebook too! Mrs. Larkin’s Goals: Academic: By the end of this year, my students will have all passed their classes and have good college study skills like textbook reading, note taking, and lab writing. Character: By the end of this year, I will be able to say what each of my students’ goals are after high school.
5
SMART Goals – Critique (5 min) Pair up with a person you haven’t met already Share your half-sheet goals Are your partner’s goals SMART? Help them to improve it in one way! Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely
6
Turn in Homework (1 min) Half-Sheet Side One should be about you Side Two should have your two goals
7
Investigation (12 min) Measurement With Bodies Scavenger Hunt! Try to get as many UNIQUE measurement as possible Use specific increments of your BODY Example: 1 hand, 2 finger lengths, 3 finger widths, 4 of your feet, 5 of your height, etc. You must use a DIFFERENT type of measurement for each one! Cannot use number of hands for both your height and your armspan Movement does NOT count Cannot say something is 15 strides long You need NUMBER and UNIT for every answer 10 minutes to get as many as possible. Will be turned in.

Explanation (20 min) Date the page M 8/19/13 T 8/20/13 Title the page U1D1: Measurement (Stands for Unit 1, Day 1) M 8/19/13 or T 8/20/13 U1D1: Measurement
9
A measurement must have: Magnitude (Size)Dimension (Units)
10
U1D1: Measurement How many units can you think of?
11
U1D1: Measurement Two Measurement Systems US Customary Units: Mainly in United States of America SI Units: International System of Units (global!) US Customary UnitsSI Units Distance (How Far?)Inch (in) Foot (ft) Yard (yd) Mile (mi) Meter (m) Mass (How Heavy?)Pound (lb) Ton (t) Kilogram (kg) Time (When?)Minute (min) Hour (h) Second (s) Volume (How Much Space?)Cup (c) Pint (pt) Quart (qt) Gallon (gal) Liter (L)
12
US Customary Units for Length in foot (ft) 1 ft = 12 in U1D1: Measurement 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in ft yard (yd) 1 mi = 1,760 yd = 5,280 ft mile (mi)
13
U1D1: Measurement US Customary Units for Length Reading a Ruler for Inches
14
U1D1: Measurement US Customary Units for Mass 1 t = 2000 lb
15
U1D1: Measurement US Customary Units for Time 1 min = 60 s 1 h = 60 min 1 d = 24 h 1 yr = 365.25 d How can you have a fourth of a day?
16
U1D1: Measurement US Customary Units for Volume 1 pt = 2 c 1 qt = 2 pt 1 gal = 4 qt
17
U1D1: Measurement SI Units Length: 1 m ≈ 1 yd (US) or guitar length Mass: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs (US) or mass of pineapple
18
U1D1: Measurement Using a ruler for cm
19
U1D1: Measurement SI Units Time: 1 s is about the time it takes to blink 7 times Volume: 1L is about half a 2L bottle of soda
20
U1D1: Measurement Using a graduated cylinder for mL Always read at the bottom of the meniscus (curved surface)
21
U1D1: Measurement 1 mL = 0.001 L,1 kg = 1000 g, 1das = 10 s, 1 cm = 0.01 m
22
Break 7 minute break Late/Not in Seat/Not Ready = Tardy!
23
Lab Lab Notebook Explanation Everyone must write down there own data! (i.e. give everyone a chance to do the measurement)
24
Goal Reflection How did today help to further your SMART goals?
25
