73 Sequence In both fiction and nonfiction, sequence is the order of events. The time of day and clue words such as before and after can help you determine the order in which things happen.

74 Symbol A symbol is a person, place, event, or object that has a meaning in itself but suggests other meanings as well. Important symbols are usually repeated several times in a story. Symbols are often used to represent something concrete in a symbolic way.

75 Context Clues Synonyms—different words that have the same or similar meanings—can be context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Use the synonyms in each sentence to help determine the meaning of each unknown words in italics. Identify the synonyms you use and give definitions for each word.

77 Study Strategies There are tools and study strategies you can use to sort and organize important information while reading. One tool is a KWL chart. K stands for what you already know about the topic. W stands for what you want to learn about the topic, and L stands for what you learned.
