4 Bridge Standard Detail Sheets (XS) General Information & Disclaimer XS Sheets: Bridge Standard Details, NOT Standard Plans Disclaimer: The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) provides Bridge Standard Detail Sheets (XS) on an "as is" basis. All warranties and representations of any kind with respect to these sheets are disclaimed. These sheets are not Standard Plans and are subject to frequent modification. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure usage of the most current sheets and that the details shown are applicable for their specific project.

5 Bridge Standard Detail Sheets (XS) Major Updates for 2011 1.Landing Page: New look, more user friendly, compliant with departmental web standards, updated disclaimer, sheets are posted in two formats.dgn and.pdf (not.dwg) – big thank you to Tech Pubs! 2.General Updates: sheet numbering system, all sheets are in US Customary Units, all metric sheets have been archived. 3.Detailing Standards: microstation v8, E-FIS borders, compliance with Plain Language detailing (similar to 2010 Standard Plans) 4.Technical Content: Plain language (remove specs from plans) LRFD compliance, other technical content

6 Bridge Standard Details Sheets (XS) Major Updates (in progress) Excerpt from the SP&I Bulletin, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2011: “The Office of Structure Quality Management (SQM) is working on an IQA database to track and cross reference all structure-related standards and guidance materials to keep them consistent with each other and up-to-date with the current practice. As part of this IQA effort, SQM will review proposed changes to standards and guidance materials for content and to identify necessary related changes in other guidance documents. 8 Development, Approval & Maintenance of Bridge Standard Detail Sheets Quality Control Initiator sends requests to Technical Owner for a new or revised XS Sheet, or Technical Owner identifies need for new or revised XS Sheet Technical Manager approves resources (time and staff) Technical Owner prepares XS sheet, including supporting calculation/documents Quality Assurance Technical Manager reviews XS sheet package for compliance with design & construction standards Technical Manager approves new or updated XS Sheet package and forwards to SP&I SP&I SP&I performs an “Office Engineer” type function including: Compliance with current detailing standards, cursory constructability review, review of SSP, final approval and record retention Technical Publications posts on internet

9 Use of Bridge Standard Details Sheets in Project Plans Role Responsibility Project Engineer or Designer Reviews XS sheets for applicability on their project Consults with Technical Owner, if needed Ensures that they are using the most current sheets Identifies revisions, if needed Signs as Project Engineer Project Detailer Revises XS sheet for specific project, if needed, in accordance with Bridge Design Details 1-16 Project Specification Engineer Prepares Special Provisions Makes modifications to the SSP, if needed
