Clean Air Lawn Care The federal Environmental Protection Agency estimates there are 89 million pieces of lawn and garden equipment in the United States with engines rated at 25 HP or less. Garden Equipment engines emit high levels of carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides, producing up to 10% of the NATIONS air pollution.
7
In August 2005 President Bush signed the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005 (HR6). Parts of the EPAct give tax credits and other incentives to those who own Alternative Fuel Vehicles.
8
A conventional lawn mower pollutes as much in an hour as 40 late model cars. =
9
A Change For The Better Gasoline is one of the dirtiest and most dangerous – behind diesel – for its emissions, especially carbon monoxide and “NOx” – a mixture of oxides and nitrogen. The result is that many cities have banned the use of commercial mowers before 1 p.m. on “ozone action” days.
10
A Typical 3.5 HP Gas Mower Can emit the same amount of VOC’s in an hour as a new car driven 340 miles. A recent California Air Resource Board report shows lawn mowers statewide emit 8.28 tons of VOC’s per day. Lawn equipment users inadvertently add to the problem by spilling 17 MILLION gallons of fuel each year while refilling their equipment. MORE THAN SPILLED BY THE EXXON VALDEZ!
11
Compelling Economics Gasoline vs LP 7 Year Average –Fuel & Vehicle Acquisition Cost 26,000 lbs. GVRW 30,000 Miles per Year Fuel at Fleet Price Gasoline $2.370 LPI -Propane$1.349 LPI vs. Gas Annual Savings Numbers include capital and fuel cost but not maintenance Data taken from CLEAN FUEL USA 3/28/2006 report
12
When Compared to Reformulated Gasoline, Propane Produces 80% reduction in toxic emissions 60% less smog forming emissions
13
Advantages Of Propane Fuel Propane is clean-burning and EPA-approved as an alternative engine fuel If propane leaks, it doesn’t puddle but instead vaporizes and dissipates into the air. As a result, propane will not contaminate aquifers or soil. Propane is a nontoxic, nonpoisonous fuel
14
LPG Reduces….. Carbon dioxide by 11-13% compared to gasoline Nitrogen oxides by 15 - 80% compared to gasoline and 90 -99% compared to diesel Hydrocarbons by 20- 40% compared to gasoline Carbon monoxide by 30- 35% compared to gasoline Particulates by 80-95% compared to diesel Ultra fine particles by 99% compared to diesel Noise by 50% compared to diesel engines
15
Advantages Of Propane Powered Mowers Larger Fuel tanks minimize refueling time, increasing productivity Larger fuel tanks extend mowing time, allowing for greater mowing area No stale fuel to clog carburetor fuel lines Propane fuel causes less burnt hydrocarbons to enter the crankcase oil, extending oil life Tanks are easy to switch and easy to store 90% Of Propane is produced domestically
16
Economic Benefits The cost of propane fuel averages up to 30% less per gallon than gasoline and diesel Propane mowers offer a longer lifespan than gasoline or diesel mowers and their fuel systems require less maintenance (oil changes) Prevents fuel pilferage by employees
