The White House Today The official home of the President of the United States for over 200 years. Located in Washington, D.C.

Finished in 1800 George Washington picked the location in 1791, but John Adams was the first president to live there when it was finished in 1800.

The War of 1812 The British soldiers set the White House on fire in the War of 1812.

Interesting Facts There are 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms in the White House. There are 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases and 3 elevators. For fun there is a bowling alley, a movie theater, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a putting green and a basketball court.

The White House belongs to the People The White House is the President’s home, the President’s office and a free museum. It belongs to the citizens of the United States. The White House is a National Park! The White House is also the home of Bo, the dog.

Security You have to apply to take a tour of the White House about 3 months before you plan to visit. They run a background check on you before you are allowed to go to the White House. You can’t take any pictures or even have a camera. (Not even a cell phone!!!)

The South Lawn of the White House Every year they hold an Easter Egg hunt on the South Lawn of the White House.
