1 Residential Streets Overall Residential Street Image Residential Streets - Planting Strips Residential Streets - Sidewalk Width Next, participants assessed pictures of residential streets. The pictures focused on:

2 Overall Residential Street Image Participants rated the following residential streets according to how well they liked the overall image. The scores shown represent the average response. Streets create an image for a neighborhood, an area, and a community. Many features of a street and the way buildings orient towards a street affect our impression of that street.

11 Respondent Comments (partial) on Overall Residential Street Image Preferences – Trees, trees, trees, wide planting strips, houses facing the street, Myers Park and Dilworth are done right, sidewalks on both sides of street, narrow streets & wider streets, vertical curb, tree-lined streets are pretty Dislikes – barren cookie-cutter neighborhoods, extremely wide streets, lack of trees, tree-less neighborhoods are cold and uninviting, roll-over curb, not enough on-street parking

12 Planting Strip Participants indicated how well they liked the following planting strips. The scores shown represent the average response. A planting strip is the area between the roadway and the sidewalk. Planting strips provide a buffer between moving traffic and pedestrians on the sidewalk. If wide enough, planting strips can allow for landscaping and large maturing trees.

22 Respondent Comments (partial) on Planting Strips on Residential Streets Preferences – wide, wide, wide, wide enough for trees, BIG trees, wide enough to separate pedestrians from roadways, wider is better, well- maintained, wide planting strips are beautiful, trees are great, even modest neighborhoods look good with trees Dislikes – cars parked over sidewalks, newer neighborhoods have boring planting strips and are too narrow, planting strips with no trees, mail boxes in planting strips, poorly maintained planting strips, sight obstruction concern

23 Residential Street - Sidewalk Width Participants rated the following sidewalks according to how well the sidewalks accommodated their users. The scores shown represent the average response. Similar to the road system, a connected residential sidewalk system enables residents to travel from one place to another safely. Sidewalks accommodate a wide range of users, from children to seniors, and a wide range of activities (baby strollers, children on bicycles, and wheelchair users). Sidewalks provide a place for transportation access, recreational opportunities, and community interaction.

33 Respondent Comments (partial) on Sidewalk Width on Residential Streets Preferences – Wide, wide, wide, Wider sidewalks are better, wide enough for 2 people to walk side by side, need more sidewalks, shaded sidewalks, sidewalks are an asset, wider than 4’, set sidewalks back from the road Dislikes – Maintain sidewalks better, new subdivision sidewalks are too skinny, sidewalks on only one side of street
