Photosynthesis Kim Lachler 2010 NCES 6 L 1.2

Photosynthesis  Plants can make their own food through a process called Photosynthesis.  Photo = light  Synthesis = put together

Why is this important to you?  You eat the plants or the animals whom eat the plants so that you can get energy so you can play… work…LIVE!

Stomata  First you need to know about stomata.  It is part of a leaf where the gas (carbon dioxide and oxygen) can go in and out of the plant (kind of like breathing).

Stoma Stoma – opening in the leaf. Guard cell – controls the opening in the leaf. The stomata are mainly open during the day. Why do you think that is? Plants need sunlight to conduct photosynthesis.

Transpiration  Water evaporates from the stomata.  It is like the plant is sweating.  Water does not enter through the stomata. That is the job of the roots.

Photosynthesis  It is similar to baking a cake.  You need raw materials  A chemical reaction happens  And you get an end product.

Raw materials Raw materials Cake  Eggs  Flour  Baking soda  Water Photosynthesis  Water (H 2 O)  roots  Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 )  stomata  Sunlight  leaves/green stems

Chemical reaction Cake  Oven set at 350° F for 30 minutes. Photosynthesis  occurs with the help of Chlorophyll Chlorophyll: Chlorophyll:  Found in chloroplasts in the cells of the leaves  Makes leaves green

End Product Cake:  Cake (Chocolate cake, with chocolate icing, with chocolate ice cream, with… ) (Chocolate cake, with chocolate icing, with chocolate ice cream, with… )Photosynthesis:  Glucose (C 6 H 12 0 6 ) = sugar = food  Oxygen (6O 2 )

Photosynthesis Chemical formula (chlorophyll) (chlorophyll) 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + light --------------  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2

 Plants store the glucose (sugar) in its roots for food for the winter.  Cool nights and shorten days trigger this.  The chlorophyll breaks down and the real colors of the leaves are revealed.  Eating carrots is eating stored energy in roots.
