National Curriculum requirements (from 2014) Pupils should be taught to: Year 1 recognise, name and write ½ as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity recognise name and write ¼ and ¾ as parts of an object, shape or quantity find ½, ¼ and ¾ of a shape or quantity Year 2 Ensure pupils are taught ½, ¼ and ¾ as objects and then as operators on discrete and continuous quantities. As objects, pupils recognise and combine ½, ¼ and ¾ as parts of a whole. As operators, pupils recognise and find, for example, half of a length, container, set of objects and shapes

1 cake, 2 teachers We need to cut the cake into 2 equal pieces. Each teacher will have half (1/2) of the cake. We are sharing 1 cake equally between 2 teachers.

1 cake, 4 teachers We need to cut the cake into 4 equal pieces. Each teacher will have a quarter (1/4) of the cake. We are sharing 1 cake equally between 4 teachers.

A big dog and a small dog The big dog eats lots but the small dog does not. We need to give the small dog ¼ of the bowl of food and the big dog will have ¾ of the food. We need to split the food into 4 equal parts and the small dog will eat 1 part and the big dog will eat 3 parts. The small dog will eat ¼ of the food and the big dog will eat ¾ of the food.

2 children, 4 lollipops Half (1/2) of 4 is 2. Each child has 2 lollipops
