7. Substances A substance is matter with a composition that is always the same. The two types of pure substances are: o Elements o Compounds Any sample of a substance will always be made up of the same combination of atoms.

8. Elements An element is a substance that consists of just one type of atom. Because there are around 115 known elements, there are around 115 different types of atoms. Elements differ by the number of protons in the nucleus.

9. Elements Most elements exist as individual atoms. Some elements, such as oxygen, exist in groups, but still contain only one type of atom.

10. Compounds A compound is a substance that contains atoms of two or more different elements chemically bonded together. Carbon dioxide is a compound that consists of two elements, carbon and oxygen, that are chemically bonded together. A compound often has different properties from the individual elements that make it up.

11. Mixtures A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are physically blended together. HeterogeneousHomogeneous Individual substances are not evenly mixed. Different samples can have different combos of the same substances. Example: Lucky Charms Individual substances are evenly mixed. Different samples will have the same combos of the same substances. Example: milk

12. Homework (p. 58) Create a drawing or a poem to help you remember the difference between elements, compounds, and mixtures. DrawingPoem Define element, compound, and mixture.
