2.  The British East India company controlled India  They got raw materials and a huge potential market for their products  They controlled India by using an army made up of sepoys. or Indian soldiers

3.  The sepoys rebelled against the British due to religious conflicts  Rumors began to circulate that the cartridges the sepoys were using for their rifles were greased with beef and pork fat  This greatly offended many of the Indian soldiers

4.  Most Indians were either Hindu or Muslim, each group had a problem with the cartridges  Hindus view cows as sacred animals and Muslims do not eat pork  The soldiers had to bite off the ends of the cartridges to use them

5.  The British commanders punished the soldiers who refused to use the cartridges  The following day the soldiers rebelled  The British government eventually took control of the country to make sure it was stable

6.  Cruel treatment by the British and outdated traditional ways in India led to the growth of modernization and nationalism in the country  Nationalism-pride in your homeland

7.  Two nationalist groups began in this period ◦ The Indian National Congress ◦ The Muslim League  Both groups were calling for self government
