The British East India company controlled India They got raw materials and a huge potential market for their products They controlled India by using an army made up of sepoys. or Indian soldiers

The sepoys rebelled against the British due to religious conflicts Rumors began to circulate that the cartridges the sepoys were using for their rifles were greased with beef and pork fat This greatly offended many of the Indian soldiers

Most Indians were either Hindu or Muslim, each group had a problem with the cartridges Hindus view cows as sacred animals and Muslims do not eat pork The soldiers had to bite off the ends of the cartridges to use them

The British commanders punished the soldiers who refused to use the cartridges The following day the soldiers rebelled The British government eventually took control of the country to make sure it was stable

Cruel treatment by the British and outdated traditional ways in India led to the growth of modernization and nationalism in the country Nationalism-pride in your homeland
