ODU Formula SAE MAE 435 Final Report 4/23/13

Introduction Charles Pearson The 2013 Michigan FSAE Competition Competition Scoring: Static Events o Design Report (150 points) o Cost Report (100 points) o Presentation (75 points) Dynamic Events o Acceleration (Max longitudinal acceleration) o Skid Pad (Max lateral acceleration) o Autocross (Avg lateral and longitudinal accel) o Endurance (Durability and efficiency)

Acceleration Test

Skid Pad

Autocross

Endurance

Problem Statement Stephen Christiansen Design and fabricate a competitive car while keeping in compliance of the FSAE rules. These are some of the key concepts for the competition: High Strength (Durability) Low Weight (Improves braking, handling, and acceleration) Assembly (Low maintenance) Expense (Low production cost) Innovation (Engineering design challenge) Safety

Side Pods Christopher Caulkins Designed and fabricated side-pods A reversible female mold 4 ply of fiberglass using a cross pattern weave for torsional rigidity Left side pod houses cooling system Right side pod houses exhaust system Lower and more centered C.G. improves handling significantly

Nose Cone Kevin Kelly Designed and fabricated nose cone Mixed 2-part expanding foam Carved/sanded away excess foam Laid 3 plys of fiberglass over mold 70% weight reduction Lower mass allows for better acceleration, braking, and handling

Body Panels Aaron Hopkins Designed and fabricated body panels Advanced vacuum bagging technique 4 ply fiberglass was used for body panels 10 ply fiberglass was used for underbody panels Female molds allowed a smooth finish on outside 63% weight reduction Less weight will help acceleration

Suspension and Frame Andrew Myers 1" Chromolly Steel tube frame Double wishbone suspension Fully adjustable camber, toe, and caster angle Motion ratios: Front 1:1 Rear 1:1.25 Custom front uprights and spindles

Brakes and Controls Thomas Guglielmo Fabricated rear control arms Added Anti-penetration bars for driver safety Fabricated front & rear rockers Attached front push rods Mounted shocks and springs Assembled steering linkage Designed pedal assembly

Dimensions, shapes, and materials put into SolidWorks program Appropriate loadings placed on parts to be tested Ran FEA to determine factor of safety Optimized parts to reduce weight while retaining desired factor of safety SolidWorks Modeling Kevin Kelly

Fuel System Andrew Rowe Fuel map from 2012 car improved Cured mid range surge 8% increase in power, expecting additional 13% with new manifold

Fundraising Kamod Gautam Raising Canes Fundraiser (over $180) Panda Express Fundraiser (over $150) Upcoming fundraiser at two Skinny dip locations (VB Blvd or Colley Ave)
